2019 First Semester – Second Grade

 

The goal of the Villa Library Program is to develop in students an enjoyment of reading, an appreciation of learning and to ensure that students can apply the skills, strategies and processes to be effective users and producers of information and ideas.

 

Library Responsibilities

Students reviewed the use and location of resources in the fiction and non-fiction sections of the library. They compared the attributes of short chapter books and picture books.

 

Literature Appreciation

Using nominees for the Washington Children’s Choice Picture Book Award, students have listened to and discussed literature representing differing views, cultures, perspectives and issues. They have compared characters, setting and the plot of the story of various genres including realistic fiction, mystery, and fantasy. Students also identified attributes of non-fiction and biographies.

 

Literature Appreciation – Same, Same, But Different

Students listened to and discussed a range of stories about common traits shared by all people as well as stereotypes. We looked at traits of courageous and diverse role models. Using information from the stories, students summarized their findings and answered key questions about cultures and changing expectations.
